When speaking of an elephant, its trunk is usually the first image that comes to mind. Elephants can use their trunks to carry heavy objects, sniff things out from miles away, say hello to friends and drink water. They even use their trunks to pet each other to show love and care. These amazing helpful trunks are composed of 100,000 different muscles. At first, baby elephants haven’t got their muscles fully developed to control it. They consider the trunk a fun water toy. They even suck it for comfort and soothing, just like human babies suck their thumbs. So baby elephants have to learn how to control and use their trunks as they learn how to walk.

當提到大象時，牠們的象鼻通常是第一個印入腦海的畫面。大象可以利用牠們的象鼻搬運物品，聞到數哩以外的味道，跟朋友打招呼以及喝水。牠們甚至用象鼻輕撫彼此來表示愛意與關心。這些令人驚奇且有用的象鼻是由十萬條肌肉組成的。在一開始小象的象鼻肌肉還沒有發展完全時，牠們無法好好地控制自己的象鼻。牠們把象鼻當作是玩水的玩具。牠們甚至於會藉著吸自己的象鼻來得到安慰平靜，就像人類的嬰兒會吸吮大拇指一樣。所以小象必須在學習如何走路之時，也學習如何控制象鼻。

大象的象鼻其實同時是上唇以及鼻子。

(2) sniff (v.) 嗅，聞

Peter always sniffs his clothes to decide if they need washing.

Peter總是聞自己的衣服來決定他是否該洗它們了。

(3) compose (v.) 組成，構成

The audience of the show is composed mainly teenagers.

這個節目的觀眾大部分是由青少年組成的。

(4) soothing (adj.) 令人平靜的，安慰的

The singer's voice is so gentle and soothing that I can fall asleep listening to her songs.

這歌手的聲音如此平靜溫柔，我可以在她的歌聲中睡著。
